The owner operator of this crazy, cool, unique business that is New Nerd Novelties is Desiree Silver. Obsessed with creativity and creating things with her hands and mind from a very young age Desiree, is the ultimate in “crafter”.
She comes from a family where everyone’s unique abilities to create things have been encouraged from a very young age.
From some extended family’s early humble beginnings her parents learned to make do with what they had or could find in some creative instances which made for a unique outlook on creation and creativity.
From recycled craft to upcycling and creating something from simple crafting ingredients- the possibilities are endless with just a little bit of inspiration. Even pottery is just literally refined “dirt” that you play with until something comes out of it once heated.
She enjoys learning and practicing with a variety of techniques and thanks the muses everyday for the internet for its ability to share knowledge on new mediums, creative types and techniques.
She can be known to like 1960s Batman/ Star Trek or 1980s Cartoons or Sci Fi or black and white horror films etc and add these references into her work and or use the subject matter as a tribute. She also still loves the idea of recycled or upcycled crafts where you use something that is used for one purpose and repurpose it for another. (Bottle caps into resin jewelery and old fabric PJ pants into ruffles on an apron.) In this way she makes new things from old mediums, ideas or themes.

WHAT INSPIRES NEW NERD NOVELTIES?
The accessibility to crafting supplies and techniques has become so easy that she does work in a number of different mediums and gladly adds more whenever the inspiration takes her.
The motto for New Nerd Novelties is “What is old is new and what is new is old.” This references not just the mediums, crochet, sewing, cross stitch etc that can be considered from another generation and therefore “old” that she uses but also the subject matter.
Desiree’s philosophy in life can be described as #OwnYourWeird. This is why she has named her lifestyle brand after it.
She was inspired by Margot Robbie’s line in the Suicide Squad movie, where Harley Quinn says, “Own that shit!”, when they were talking about how they’re kind of evil, they’re the bad guys. She upholds the thought that it’s not just your good things that you need to embrace, utilize and celebrate, but your bad things too. So the “weird” is the stuff that everybody gets picked on for, but you like anyway, and she just wants to create stuff and help other people feel good about themselves.
As long as it doesn’t harm anybody = Own that Weird, that’s your weird celebrate it and if she can just make one person feel better about themselves through sharing her message and creativity, she will consider her life fulfilled.
